Here on the West Coast, the month of September is usually pretty warm so I don’t feel nostalgic about saying goodbye to summer until mid-October. Nonetheless, I still have that resilient habit to visit our local orchards right after Labor Day weekend just like I did when I was living in Toronto. As a foody, I find it fun to get my “fresh” apples from them. Of course, I always buy too much but it’s okay because I can do some serious baking and cooking.
The list of recipes that use apples is almost endless. From savory to sweet, there is a wide variety of dishes to choose from. So far I’ve posted a few of them like my Apple Cheese Pie, Stuffed Pork Tenderloin, Oliebollen, Apple Cheese Soufflés, Applesauce, etc. Now, here’s another amazing recipe to add to the list… Apple Betty!
What’s the difference between an Apple Crisp and Apple Betty? It’s all in the topping. While the crisp has oats in the flour-butter mixture, this featured one doesn’t. Some like to alternate layers with the topping mixture and the apples. I don’t. I put everything on top, tap my baking dish a few times on the counter and voilà, the flour-butter mixture is not only on top but also slightly in the fruit mixture.
An ingredient that is not commonly found in this recipe is chopped walnuts! We love adding them because they give a nice crunch to the dessert. Obviously, if there are some family members who are allergic to nuts or simply not fond of them, this added ingredient can be forgotten…
In the video, I mention to bake it between 40 to 45 minutes at 350ºF. This is when this sweet treat baking time can be tricky. The apples of this dessert are supposed to be somewhat firm but softened at the same time. You’ll have to judge the time depending on how hot your oven is. I go for 42 minutes and it comes out perfect every time…
This fall, do yourself a favor and visit your local orchards. Buy some apples and bake this scrumptious Apple Betty! It’s extremely easy and the results are absolutely delicious! Served warm with a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream, this is the perfect autumn dessert that your family will enjoy.
Bon Appétit!
