A few times, I’ve had some of my subscribers asking what Mixed Spice is – let’s not confuse it with allspice as they are not even the same. I gave them a link from Amazon and then realized that the ingredient blend was quite simple. That is why I’m posting this quick homemade recipe.
I should’ve thought of making this blend earlier because when I moved to Vancouver, there was only one grocery store that was carrying it. Back in Toronto, it wasn’t a problem finding it but it sure was here. As I’ve never really looked for it in the United States, I can imagine it might be the same scenario as here in British Columbia.
I’m not sure if it is a Québécois “thing” but there are a lot of recipes where Mixed Spice is used. My mother and father use it and so does everyone else in my family. I use it in my Tourtière (Meat Pie), Creton Maison, Ragoût de Boulettes avec Pattes de Cochon (Stew Meatballs with Pig’s Feet), just to name a few…
If you are not familiar with this spice or cannot find it at your grocery store, now you can make it at home. Make sure to store your Mixed Spice in an airtight container…
