We love Gardening and if you’re a foody (yes with a “y”) like us and enjoy cooking with fresh ingredients, there’s nothing better than growing your own herbs, vegetables and fruits. Every spring, David and I plant our favorite herbs, grow our own tomatoes, peppers, and more. It’s so awesome to simply step out on your balcony and get some fresh basil, chives or tomatoes for your recipes.
Although we grow our favorites, we like to add new additions. A few years ago, we came across this interesting tomato variety. Unfamiliar with it, we had to learn about its unusual color and figure out when to harvest it. Let’s talk about Purple Blue Cherry Tomatoes!
First, let me tell you more about the name. When David and I bought it, the tag read “Purple Blue Cherry Tomatoes”. With more research, I found out that they can also be called Indigo Rose or Sunblack. Now don’t quote me on it as I’m not 100% certain that they’re the same variety.
When you buy a regular tomato plant, unless they’re tomatillos, it’s quite easy to know when to harvest them. They go from green to red, simple as that! When it comes to the Purple Blue Cherry Tomatoes, it’s another story. How can you tell? Here are a few clues along with some helpful information…
When exposed to sunlight, their skin turns from green to a purple eggplant-color. From there, to know when they’re ripe, their color continues changing from a shiny purple blue to a dull purple brown.
The plant needs space plus it will grow pretty tall. It takes 2 1/2 to 3 months to ripen so be patient. An indication that they’re ready to be harvested is they soften to the touch like other tomatoes. Also the bottom will be red versus green.
When you cut into them, their interior flesh is red just like a regular cherry tomato. Although their skin is purple, there’s no impact to the taste of the fruit. They taste sweet with a hint of tartness and slightly tangy. They are a great addition to salads, pasta, etc. or to eat just as is.
This eggplant-colored tomato is quite unique and also healthy. Like other pigmented purple fruits & vegetables such as blueberries, passion fruits, plums, blackberries, raisins, black currants, beetroot, purple potatoes, purple cabbage, red leaf lettuce, radicchio, and more, Purple Blue Cherry Tomatoes have great health benefits; antioxidants, anticancer properties, vitamins and nutrients.
These Purple Blue Cherry Tomatoes are quite unique and make a delicious new addition to your garden. This is definitely a variety you should try plus they’re so colorful… a tasty ingredient for your summer recipes!
